Nestled in the lush hills of the Garhwal Himalayas, Tehri Lake is a massive, emerald-green artificial reservoir created by the construction of the Tehri Dam--the tallest dam in India. Today, it has transformed into the premier watersports destination of North India. Offering a breathtaking combination of high-altitude mountain scenery and exhilarating adventure activities, Tehri Lake is a must-visit destination for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike.
Tehri Lake
The Adventure Capital and Engineering Marvel of Uttarakhand
History and The Old Tehri Town
The Submerged City
Beneath the massive waters of Tehri Lake lies the old city of Tehri. Historically the capital of the princely state of Tehri Garhwal, the entire town was submerged in the early 2000s to make way for the massive hydroelectric project.
The Tehri Dam
Standing at a staggering height of 260.5 meters (855 ft), the Tehri Dam is an engineering marvel. It is an earth and rock-fill dam built on the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Bhilangna rivers, providing electricity and water to several Northern states.
New Tehri
Following the submersion of the old town, a modern, planned township called New Tehri was built on a hilltop overlooking the lake to resettle the displaced population.
The Dobra Chanti Bridge
Spanning 440 meters across the lake, the Dobra Chanti bridge is India's longest motorable single-lane suspension bridge. Opened in 2020, it dramatically cuts travel time between Pratapnagar and Tehri and has become a major tourist attraction, especially when beautifully illuminated at night.
